Note Well: Please be as diplomatic as you are entrepreneurial when you approach these professors for advice and a signature. They do this work for STS students besides carrying their own departmental responsibilities. Some haven’t advised STSers in quite a while, a few ever, so be sure to explain clearly what you’re asking them to do. Know the guidelines that your Technical Depth and Technical Literacy packages must satisfy—you might have to summarize them to the individual—and explain that, as printed on the B.A. and B.S. forms, signing off on a package simply affirms that, in the signer’s opinion, the collection of courses in question would be a good one for the purposes of the STS B.A. or B.S. degree. Explain to the individual you approach, that you’re only asking for advice on whether you’ve put together a good package and a signature attesting to that, not for her or him to become your permanent advisor.
