Become an STS Peer Advisor!

We are looking for energetic, knowledgeable and responsible STS majors who are able to work 3 hours per week and the occasional student event such as Major’s Night.  This is a great opportunity to network within the STS student and faculty community, to share your degree experiences with prospective and current majors, to sharpen your communication skills and to bring a student voice to STS programming and events!

PEER ADVISOR POSITION DESCRIPTION

TIME COMMITMENT:

Spring Shadowing (4 hours): Required to shadow current peer advisor(s) this Spring 2018 unless studying abroad
End-of-Summer Training (6-8 hours): Required to attend training on Friday, Sept. 21st (Friday before Autumn quarter begins) 
Office Hours (3 hours/week): Work one 2-hour office hour block + 1-hour staff meeting + events as needed

Under the guidance of the STS Undergraduate Advisor, Peer Advisors will:
-Hold Weekly Drop-In Office Hours: a 2-hour block (once a week) will be advertised to prospective and current majors as drop-in office hours in which you are available to offer a student perspective on courses, major requirements, and your academic experience. You will also answer email inquiries to the sts-advisors account. Office hours will be adjusted quarterly based on your class schedule.
-Organize Student and Program Events: be the student representative at campus-wide events, including majors nights and academic open houses. Also be available at Program sponsored events, including the annual “What is STS” Roundtable Event, the Prospective Major Dinner and the STS Alumni Networking Dinner.
-Manage Student Communications and Social Network Accounts: Manage STS Facebook page. Update STS LinkedIn social networking site and STS bulletin board with event information and general announcements of interest to our majors. Manage student of the month process.
-Assist with Administrative Tasks: Upload the curriculum plans for students in the process of declaring STS to Box. Occasionally assist with the preparation of STS forms and brochures when needed.
-Act as student representative and liaison among the students, staff, and faculty
-Lead outreach efforts geared towards prospective majors
-Report to and assist the Undergraduate Advisor
 

QUALIFICATIONS:

-Currently declared STS major with Junior or Senior status in Autumn 2018
-Able to work 3 hours per week + events as needed and be available for the entire academic year
-Strong knowledge of the program and its major requirements
-Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
-Independent learner and worker
-Ability to maintain confidentiality
-Demonstrated record of leadership, maturity and academic excellence
-Good organizational skills, dependable and responsible

COMPENSATION:

Students will be compensated $15/hour for their work. Interviews will take place at the beginning of Spring quarter (students studying abroad will be video conferenced).
